The first word of the gospel is "repent." Jesus picked up where John the Baptist began, "Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 3:3; 4:17). John spoke of bringing forth "fruits worthy of repentance" (Matthew 3:8).
In Acts 19:11-20 we read of some who brought forth fruits worthy of repentance: "And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver."
Notice what happened next: "So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed" (Acts 19:20).
